Year of the Snake

The snake is the sixth of the twelve-year cycle of animals in the Chinese zodiac and is associated with the Earthly Branch symbol 巳. According to legend, the snake's position in the cycle was determined by its performance in a race to cross a great river, where it hitched a ride on a horse's hoof to edge out the competition. The snake is said to be associated with the hours of 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. and the 4th month of the Chinese lunar calendar, which usually falls in May or June. In Chinese symbology, snakes are regarded as intelligent but lacking in scruples.
