War of the End of the World
The War of the End of the World is a 1981 novel by Peruvian novelist Mario Vargas Llosa, which is a fictionalized account of the War of Canudos conflict in late 19th-century Brazil. The novel tells the story of Antonio Conselheiro, a charismatic figure who preaches that the end of the world is imminent, and his followers who build a large town in Canudos and repeatedly defeat military expeditions sent to remove them. As the violence escalates, the state's violence against them increases, and they too turn increasingly violent, eventually leading to a terrible and brutal battle with the poor. The novel is considered one of Vargas Llosa's most accomplished works, and is included in the "Western canon" by American critic Harold Bloom.learn more on wikipedia
