Volgoneft 212
The MV Volgoneft-212 was a Soviet-built oil tanker that broke in two in a storm in the Kerch Strait in 2024, causing the 2024 Kerch Strait oil spill. The ship was originally built in 1969 and was part of the Project 1577 Volgoneft class, which was designed for mixed navigation and short-sea shipping. Volgoneft-212 was re-fitted in 2024 and had a length of 136 meters, slightly longer than a standard Project 1577 tanker. The ship was carrying a cargo of 4,300 tons of mazut when it broke in two and sank, releasing oil into the sea. All 13 members of the crew were rescued by a helicopter, but one crew member later died of hypothermia. The incident occurred on December 15, 2024, and an investigation was launched by the Investigative Committee of Russia.learn more on wikipedia
