Unknown Soldier
The first known monument of an unknown soldier in Europe was the Landsoldaten created in 1849 in Fredericia, Denmark. Following World War I, a movement arose to commemorate unidentified soldiers with a single tomb, and the UK and France jointly decided to bury a symbolic unknown soldier. The UK and France conducted services connected with their monumental graves on Armistice Day 1920, with the UK creating the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior at Westminster Abbey and France creating La tombe du soldat in the Arc de Triomphe. The idea of a symbolic Tomb of the Unknown Soldier then spread to other countries, including the United States, Portugal, Italy, and others, with many countries creating their own tombs to commemorate unidentified soldiers.learn more on wikipedia
