Torres Strait Island

The Torres Strait Islands are an archipelago of 274 small islands in the Torres Strait, spanning 48,000 km2, but with a total land area of only 566 km2. The islands are inhabited by the indigenous Torres Strait Islanders and are mostly part of Queensland, Australia, but are administered by the Torres Strait Regional Authority. The islands were first claimed by the British in 1770, but British administrative control did not begin until 1862, and the islands were later annexed by Queensland in 1879.
