Tanzania Zambia Railway
The Tazara Railway is a 1,860 km long single-track railway connecting Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia's Central Province. Built between 1970 and 1975 with Chinese financial and technical assistance, it was the longest railway in sub-Saharan Africa and the largest foreign-aid project undertaken by China at the time. The railway was initially a crucial route for Zambia's bulk trade, but it has faced operational difficulties since its completion, with freight traffic declining significantly in the 1990s. As of 2014/2015, freight traffic had bottomed out at 88,000 metric tons, less than 2% of the railway's design capacity. In 2024, China's CCECC submitted a proposal to upgrade the Tazara to standard gauge and operate the line, with a Memorandum of Understanding signed in September 2024.learn more on wikipedia
