The Syrian civil war is an ongoing conflict that began in 2011 with protests against the Ba'athist regime of Bashar al-Assad, leading to a full-blown civil war by 2012. Rebel forces initially made significant advances, but were ultimately pushed back by government forces with the help of Iranian and Russian support. The conflict escalated with the rise of the Islamic State, which was eventually defeated by the US-led CJTF coalition and Kurdish forces in 2017.
