Suez Canal
The Suez Canal is a 193.30-kilometre-long artificial sea-level waterway in Egypt that connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea through the Isthmus of Suez. It was built by the Compagnie de Suez from 1859 to 1869 and officially opened on November 17, 1869. The canal allows vessels to travel directly between the North Atlantic and northern Indian oceans, reducing the journey distance and time. It is operated and maintained by the state-owned Suez Canal Authority and is a key trade route between Europe and Asia, with over 20,600 vessels traversing it in 2021. The canal has played an important military strategic role and has been closed several times, including during the Suez Crisis of 1956 and the Six-Day War in 1967.learn more on wikipedia
