Statute of Autonomy

A statute of autonomy is a law that grants self-government to a subnational unit and establishes the organization of the autonomous government, electoral rules, and distribution of competences between different levels of governance. In Spain, 17 autonomous communities and 2 autonomous cities were created through the process of devolution after the transition to democracy in 1979, each with its own Statute of Autonomy.
