Francis of Assisi, born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone around 1181, was an Italian mystic, poet, and Catholic friar who founded the Franciscans and is one of the most venerated figures in Christianity. He renounced his wealthy upbringing and became a beggar and itinerant preacher, and is known for his devotion to poverty, chastity, and obedience. He arranged the first live nativity scene in 1223 and received the stigmata in 1224, and was canonized by Pope Gregory IX on 16 July 1228, becoming the patron saint of Italy and the namesake of the city of San Francisco.learn more on wikipedia
