Spartacus

Spartacus was a Thracian gladiator who led a major slave uprising, known as the Third Servile War, against the Roman Republic. He escaped from a gladiatorial school in 73 BC and, despite initial small numbers, was able to defeat several Roman military units, swelling his forces to an estimated 70,000. Spartacus was a capable tactician, but his revolt was ultimately defeated in 71 BC, and he was presumed killed in the final battle.
