Signals intelligence, also known as SIGINT, involves the interception and analysis of signals, including communications between individuals and electronic signals not used for communication. This field of intelligence-gathering has a long history, dating back to the Boer War in 1900, where the British intercepted and used wireless signals captured by the Boers. However, it wasn't until the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905 that signals intelligence became a modern and significant force. During World War I, the British and other Allied powers developed expertise in signals intelligence, using techniques such as cryptanalysis and direction-finding to gather crucial information about enemy positions, movements, and plans.
