Siachen Glacier

The Siachen Glacier is a glacier located in the eastern Karakoram range in the Himalayas, approximately 76 km long, and the longest in the Karakoram and second-longest in the world's non-polar areas. It has an altitude of 5,753 meters at its head and 3,620 meters at its terminus, and is under Indian administration as part of the union territory of Ladakh since 1984, despite Pakistan's territorial claim. The region is characterized by extreme weather conditions, with over 1,000 cm of winter snowfall and temperatures as low as -50°C. The Siachen Glacier system covers about 700 km², and is named after the abundance of roses in the region.
