Salton Sea

The Salton Sea is a shallow, landlocked, highly saline lake in Southern California, created in 1905 when water from the Colorado River flowed into the Salton Basin. The lake was initially a resort destination, but suffered from contamination, fish and bird die-offs, and toxic dust storms in the 1980s and 1990s. Local agriculture reduced runoff into the lake, causing the lake to shrink and exposing toxic dust.
