Salah Al-Din Route

The Salah al-Din Road is the main highway of the Gaza Strip, extending 45 kilometers from the Rafah Crossing in the south to the Erez Crossing in the north, and is named after the 12th-century Muslim general Salah al-Din. The road is one of the oldest in the world and has been used by various armies throughout history, including the armies of Ancient Egypt, Alexander the Great, the Crusaders, and Napoleon. After gaining control of Palestine, the British constructed a railroad adjacent to the road for supply and transportation, but its former role as a major link between Egypt and Syria has diminished due to the Arab-Israeli conflict.
