Real Genius

Real Genius is a 1985 science fiction comedy film directed by Martha Coolidge and starring Val Kilmer and Gabriel Jarret. The film is set on the campus of Pacific Tech, a science and engineering university, where a CIA agent has covertly hired a professor to develop a laser weapon, and two students, Chris Knight and Mitch Taylor, uncover the professor's true intentions.
