Potomac River
The Potomac River is a major river in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, flowing from the Potomac Highlands in West Virginia to the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. It is 405 miles long, with a drainage area of 14,700 square miles, and forms part of the borders between Maryland and Washington, D.C., and West Virginia and Virginia. The river has significant historical and political significance, as the nation's capital of Washington, D.C. is located on its banks, and it was a major boundary between the Union and the Confederacy during the American Civil War. The Potomac River has two sources, the North Branch and the South Branch, which converge in West Virginia to form the main river, and it traverses five geological provinces before flowing into the Chesapeake Bay.learn more on wikipedia
