Orcus

Orcus was a god of the underworld and punisher of broken oaths in Etruscan and Roman mythology, also used to refer to the underworld itself. He was likely transliterated from the Greek daemon Horkos, the personification of oaths. Orcus was conflated with other underworld gods and was worshipped in rural areas, surviving as a folk figure into the Middle Ages. His name was later used to refer to demons and underworld monsters, including the French ogre and the Italian orco. The orco from Ludovico Ariosto's Orlando Furioso was an inspiration for J.R.R.
