Ngāi Tahu
ai generated text
Ngāi Tahu is the principal Māori iwi (tribe) of the South Island, with a takiwā (tribal area) that extends from the top of the island to Stewart Island in the south. The tribe originated in the Gisborne District of the North Island, but migrated to the South Island in the 15th century, where they encountered and eventually absorbed several other iwi. Over time, Ngāi Tahu developed a complex ancestry, with descendants of Paikea and his brothers Tahupōtiki and Tahumatua, as well as intermarriage with other iwi and European settlers. Today, Ngāi Tahu is the largest iwi in New Zealand, with an estimated 74,082 people affiliated with the tribe.learn more on wikipedia
