Newcastle International Airport is a primary and busiest airport in North East England, and the second busiest in Northern England, serving approximately 7.7 miles from Newcastle City Centre. In 2019, it handled 5.2 million passengers annually and was named the best airport in Europe serving 5-15 million passengers annually by Airports Council International. The airport is owned by seven local authorities and AMP Capital, with the local authorities holding a 51% stake. It mainly serves the counties of Tyne and Wear, County Durham, and Northumberland, as well as Cumbria and the Scottish Borders.
