New Britain Island

New Britain is the largest island in the Bismarck Archipelago, part of Papua New Guinea, and is approximately the size of Taiwan. The island has a crescent-shaped coastline and is home to several active volcanoes, including Ulawun, the highest volcano in the country. The island was inhabited by indigenous Papuans for thousands of years, with evidence of human occupation dating back to 21,000 BC. In the 19th century, whaling ships from Britain, Australia, and America visited the island. Germany proclaimed a protectorate over the island in 1884 and it became part of German New Guinea, with the name Neupommern.
