Negros Island
Negros is the fourth largest and third most populous island in the Philippines, with a total land area of 13,309 km2. The island is part of the Visayas region and is inhabited by the Negrenses, with a population of 4,656,893 people as of 2020. Negros was originally called Buglas, an old Hiligaynon word, and was inhabited by the aboriginal Ata, one of several aboriginal Negrito ethnic groups. The island was colonized by the Spanish, who renamed it Negros, after the dark-skinned natives they observed, and it became a province in 1865. In 1890, the island was officially partitioned into the present-day provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental. The Negrense peoples rose in revolt against the Spanish colonial government in 1898, led by Aniceto Lacson and Juan Araneta, and the island was governed as the Republic of Negros from November 1898 to March 1899. The region was dissolved in 2017, but was reestablished in 2024 with the signing of Republic Act No. 12000.learn more on wikipedia
