Mount Vesuvius

Mount Vesuvius is a somma-stratovolcano located in Campania, Italy, about 9 km east of Naples. It is one of several volcanoes forming the Campanian volcanic arc and has a long historic and literary tradition. The volcano is known for its violent and explosive eruptions, which are known as Plinian eruptions. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, Stabiae and other settlements, killing over 1,000 people.
