Margaret Bridge
The Margaret Bridge is a three-way bridge in Budapest, Hungary, connecting Buda and Pest across the Danube and linking Margaret Island to the banks. It is 607.5 meters in length and 25 meters in width, with an unusual geometry due to a small extension added later. The bridge was designed by French engineer Ernest Goüin and built between 1872 and 1876, and was the second permanent bridge in Budapest after Széchenyi Chain Bridge. During World War II, the eastern span of the bridge was destroyed in an explosion, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 100 to 600 people, including civilians, soldiers, and Jewish forced laborers. The bridge was later rebuilt and renovated between 2009 and 2011, incorporating the original steel material into the rebuilt structure and adding new barriers, floodlights, and a bike path. Human remains were discovered during the renovation, believed to be victims of the far-right Arrow Cross Party. The bridge has been the site of numerous suicides, inspiring a ballad by Hungarian poet János Arany.learn more on wikipedia
