Magnitsky Act

The Magnitsky Act is a bipartisan law passed by the U.S. Congress in 2012 to punish Russian officials responsible for the death of Sergei Magnitsky, a Russian tax lawyer who was beaten to death in a Moscow prison in 2009, and to grant permanent normal trade relations status to Russia and Moldova. The law was signed into effect by President Barack Obama on December 14, 2012, and authorizes the U.S. government to sanction and freeze assets of foreign government officials worldwide who are human rights offenders. In 2016, the Global Magnitsky Act was passed, which expanded the law to include individuals from any country who engage in human rights abuses, allowing for the freezing of their assets and a ban on entry into the United States.learn more on wikipedia
