Madeira Island

Madeira Island is a Portuguese island located in the Atlantic Ocean, with a total population of 245,595 as of 2021. It has an area of 740.7 square kilometers and is the largest and most populous island of the Madeira Archipelago. The island is a massive submerged shield volcano that rises about 6 kilometers from the ocean floor, formed over 5 million years ago. The volcano was active until about 700,000 years ago, producing scoria cones and lava flows. The most recent volcanic eruptions occurred 6,500 years ago, creating more cinder cones and lava flows.
