M5 International Highway

The M5 Motorway is a 450 km motorway in Syria that serves as the country's south-north backbone and international road, connecting the border with Jordan to Damascus and Aleppo. It passes through several major cities and intersects with the M4 Motorway near Saraqib. During the Syrian Civil War, various rebel groups have controlled parts of the M5 since 2012. In 2019 and 2020, the highway was a war zone, but the Syrian Army recaptured it on February 14, 2020, and then again regained control on March 3, 2020, after opposition factions and Turkish forces had recaptured Saraqib on February 26.
