Lanyu Island

Orchid Island is a 45 km2 volcanic island off the southeastern coast of Taiwan, separated from the Batanes of the Philippines by the Bashi Channel. It is governed as Lanyu Township in Taitung County, and its indigenous Tao people call it Pongso no Tao or Ma'ataw. The island was previously known as Tabako or Redhead Island, and has also been known as Lanyu or Botel Tobago. It was settled by the ancestors of the Tao people during the Austronesian Expansion around 4000 years ago, and was visited by European sailors in the 19th century. The island was declared an ethnological research area off-limits to the general public by Imperial Japan, but is now open to tourism and has schools that teach Mandarin.
