Lampedusa Island
The island of Lampedusa is the largest of the Italian Pelagie Islands in the Mediterranean Sea, with an area of 20.2 km2 and a population of around 6,000 people. It is located approximately 113 kilometers from Tunisia and 205 kilometers from Sicily, making it Italy's southernmost island. The main industries of the island are fishing, agriculture, and tourism, with a ferry service linking the island to Porto Empedocle, Sicily. The island has been an entry point for migrants, particularly from Libya and Tunisia, since the early 2000s. In 2013, the island's beach, Rabbit Beach, was voted the world's best beach by TripAdvisor. The island has a rich history, dating back to the ancient Phoenicians, Greeks, and Romans, and was later used as a shelter by the Hospitaller fleet. In 1667, the island was given to Ferdinand Tomasi of Palermo, who acquired the title of Prince of Lampedusa and is the ancestor of the writer Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa.learn more on wikipedia
