Laken Riley Act

The Laken Riley Act is a proposed United States law that would require the Department of Homeland Security to detain illegal immigrants charged or convicted of theft-related crimes, allowing states to sue the department for alleged failures in immigration enforcement. The bill was introduced after the murder of Laken Riley by an illegal migrant in Georgia who had previously been cited for shoplifting, and has been passed twice in the House of Representatives, first in the 118th Congress by a 251-170 vote and again in the 119th Congress by a 264-159 vote.
