Lake Pontchartrain

Lake Pontchartrain is an estuary located in southeastern Louisiana, covering an area of 630 square miles with an average depth of 12-14 feet. It is roughly oval in shape, with shipping channels kept deeper through dredging, and is connected to the Gulf of Mexico via the Rigolets strait and Chef Menteur Pass. The lake is crossed by the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, the longest continuous bridge over water in the world, and receives fresh water from several rivers and bayous.
