Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu is a freshwater lake located on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, and is one of the African Great Lakes. It has a surface area of approximately 2,700 square kilometers, making it Africa's eighth largest lake. The lake is 42 kilometers long and has a maximum depth of 475 meters. Lake Kivu is known to undergo limnic eruptions, where the release of dissolved carbon dioxide and methane from the deep waters can be catastrophic, posing a threat to the lives of the two million people living nearby.
