Kapustin Yar

Kapustin Yar is a Russian military training area and rocket launch complex in Astrakhan Oblast, established by the Soviet Union on 13 May 1946. It was initially used to launch test rockets for the Russian military, as well as satellites and sounding rockets, and was used as the development site for new technology. The site has been associated with numerous Soviet-era UFO sightings, and has been referred to as the "Russian Roswell" in public opinion. Kapustin Yar was the only publicly known Soviet missile test range until 1959, and it served as a cosmodrome from 1966, hosting space launches for the R-12 and R-14 derived Kosmos boosters.
