Kamaran Island

Kamaran is the largest Yemeni island in the Red Sea, measuring 108 km2 in size, with a population of 2,200. Strategically located, the island has been occupied by various powers throughout history, including the Portuguese, Ottomans, and British. The British occupied the island in 1915 and administered it from Aden, despite objections from Yemen, until they formally declared the governor of Aden to be the governor of Kamaran in 1949.
