Herculaneum

Herculaneum was an ancient Roman town located in the modern-day comune of Ercolano, Campania, Italy, that was buried under a massive pyroclastic flow in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. It was the first Vesuvian city to be discovered, in 1709, and was known for being well-preserved due to the carbonized pyroclastic material that covered it. With a population of around 5,000, Herculaneum was a wealthy seaside retreat for the Roman elite, featuring luxurious houses with lavish marble cladding and a high density of wealthy residences.
