Hebrew is a Northwest Semitic language within the Afroasiatic language family, spoken by the Israelites and remaining in regular use as a first language until after 200 CE. The language was revived as a spoken language in the 19th century, led by Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, and is now the official language of the State of Israel, with over nine million speakers worldwide.
