Havana Bay

Havana Harbor is the main port in Cuba, created from the natural Havana Bay, and divides into three main harbors: Marimelena, Guanabacoa, and Atarés. The harbor was fortified by the Spaniards in the 16th century and later expanded with the construction of the Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña, Castillo de la Real Fuerza, and San Salvador de la Punta Fortress. Notable incidents in the harbor's history include the sinking of the USS Maine in 1898, which led to the Spanish-American War, and the explosion of the French freighter La Coubre in 1960, which killed an estimated 100 people. Havana Harbor also has the distinction of being the site of the first recorded shark attack in 1749.
