"Hail to the Chief" is the personal anthem of the President of the United States, adapted from a Scottish Gaelic melody by James Sanderson in the early 19th century. The song, originally titled "The Boat Song," was first played to announce the arrival of Sir Walter Scott's character Roderick Dhu in Scott's 1810 poem "The Lady of the Lake." The song gained popularity and was first used to honor George Washington in 1815, then became a standard part of presidential events, including inauguration ceremonies, after being performed at President John Quincy Adams' ceremony in 1828.
