Galaxy Leader
The Galaxy Leader is a roll-on/roll-off vehicle carrier built in 2002 at Stocznia Gdynia in Poland, and it was operated by Nippon Yusen, a Japanese shipping company. The ship was owned by Galaxy Maritime Ltd., which is owned by Ray Car Carriers, Ltd., and was co-owned by Israeli businessman Abraham Ungar. In November 2023, the ship was hijacked by Houthis, who seized it and took its 25 crew members hostage in Yemen. The ship was powered by a Sulzer 7-cylinder diesel engine and had a capacity of approximately 4,500 Car Equivalent Units. The hijacking was described as sophisticated and bore the hallmarks of an Iranian-style operation, and the Iranian government was accused of providing operational and intelligence assistance to the Houthis. The incident threatened global shipping routes and prompted the creation of a new security operation.learn more on wikipedia
