Five-Day War
The August 2008 Russo-Georgian War was a conflict between Georgia and the Russian Federation, with the involvement of Russian-backed separatist regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. The war began on August 1, 2008, with the shelling of Georgian villages by South Ossetian forces, and escalated into a full-scale invasion by Russian forces on August 8, 2008. The conflict resulted in the displacement of 192,000 people, and the destruction of many ethnic Georgian villages in South Ossetia. Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia from Georgia on August 26, 2008, and the Georgian government severed diplomatic relations with Russia. The war also saw the involvement of cyber warfare and an information war, and led to a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights in 2021 that Russia maintained "direct control" over the separatist regions and was responsible for grave human rights abuses.learn more on wikipedia
