Enola Gay
The Enola Gay is a Boeing B-29 Superfortress bomber that was named after the mother of Colonel Paul Tibbets, its pilot. On August 6, 1945, it dropped the first atomic bomb, "Little Boy," on Hiroshima, Japan, destroying about three-quarters of the city. The aircraft then participated in the second nuclear attack on Nagasaki, Japan, after being forced to change targets due to weather conditions. After the war, the Enola Gay returned to the United States and was operated from various air bases before being transferred to the Smithsonian Institution in 1946 and eventually disassembled and stored in 1961. The aircraft was reassembled and displayed at the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in 2003, after being the subject of controversy and debate over its display and historical context.learn more on wikipedia
