EU AI Act

The Artificial Intelligence Act is a European Union regulation concerning artificial intelligence, established to provide a common framework for AI within the EU. It classifies non-exempt AI applications by their risk of causing harm into four levels - unacceptable, high, limited, minimal - and general-purpose AI, imposing transparency requirements, especially for open source models and high-capability models. The Act also creates a European Artificial Intelligence Board to promote national cooperation and ensure compliance with the regulation. It was proposed by the European Commission on 21 April 2021, passed by the European Parliament on 13 March 2024, and unanimously approved by the EU Council on 21 May 2024. The Act regulates the providers of AI systems and entities using AI in a professional context, with exceptions for military, national security, research, and non-professional purposes. It also establishes new bodies for implementing and enforcing the Act, involving EU-level coordination and national implementation.
