The building serves as a residence for clergy and cardinals participating in a papal conclave and was commissioned by Pope John Paul II to provide more comfortable accommodations. It features 106 suites, 22 single rooms, and one apartment, and is run by the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul.
