Demilitarized Zone

A demilitarized zone (DMZ) is an area where treaties or agreements between states forbid military installations, activities, or personnel. DMZs often lie along established frontiers or boundaries between military powers or alliances, and may form de facto international borders. Examples of DMZs include the Korean Demilitarized Zone, a 14 km wide area between Iraq and Kuwait, and Antarctica, which is preserved for scientific exploration and study.
