Deepwater Horizon
The Deepwater Horizon was an ultra-deepwater, dynamically positioned, semi-submersible offshore drilling rig owned by Transocean and operated by BP. It was built in 2001 in South Korea by Hyundai Heavy Industries and was the second semi-submersible rig of its kind. The rig was commissioned by R&B Falcon, a later asset of Transocean, and was leased to BP from 2001 until September 2013. On April 20, 2010, a blowout caused an explosion on the rig, killing 11 crewmen and igniting a fireball that was visible from 40 miles away. The fire was inextinguishable and the rig collapsed two days later, resulting in the largest marine oil spill in history. The rig was capable of operating in waters as deep as 8,000 feet and was designed to drill subsea wells for oil exploration and production. It was equipped with advanced systems, including a drill monitoring system and automated shutoff systems, which played a crucial role in the rig's operation.learn more on wikipedia
