Colosseum

The Colosseum is an elliptical amphitheatre in the centre of Rome, Italy, built between 72 and 80 AD under the emperors Vespasian and Titus. It is the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built and was used for gladiatorial contests, animal hunts, executions, and other public spectacles, with an estimated audience of 50,000 to 80,000 spectators. The Colosseum is built of travertine limestone, tuff, and brick-faced concrete and was named after a colossal statue of Nero that stood nearby.
