Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant
The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant is located in northern Ukraine, near the city of Pripyat, and was originally named the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant of V. I. Lenin. The plant was commissioned in phases between 1978 and 1984, with four reactors entering commercial operation, and was cooled by an engineered pond fed by the Pripyat River. In 1986, a catastrophic explosion and meltdown occurred in reactor No. 4, resulting in the plant being placed within a large restricted area known as the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. The three other reactors remained operational post-accident, but were eventually shut down due to foreign pressures, and the plant has since entered the decommissioning phase, expected to be completed by 2065.learn more on wikipedia
