China's Chang'e 5 mission was the country's first lunar sample-return mission and the fifth in the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program. The mission launched on November 23, 2020, and landed on the Moon on December 1, 2020, collecting 1,731 grams of lunar samples. The spacecraft returned to Earth on December 16, 2020, making China the third country to return lunar samples, after the United States and the Soviet Union.
