Camp Lejeune
Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is a 246-square-mile United States military training facility in Jacksonville, North Carolina, with 14 miles of beaches and facilities for amphibious assault training, deployments, and other military operations. The base encompasses 156,000 acres, with 18 kilometers of beach, 32 gun positions, 48 tactical landing zones, and 80 live fire ranges. The base has a long history dating back to April 1941, when construction began on an 11,000-acre tract, and it was later renamed in honor of John A. Lejeune, the 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps, in 1942. The base has been the site of various incidents, including a 1996 helicopter crash that killed 14 people and a 2018 hurricane that caused $3.6 billion in damage and sewage releases.learn more on wikipedia
