Bikini Atoll

Bikini Atoll is a coral reef in the Marshall Islands consisting of 23 islands surrounding a 229.4-square-mile central lagoon. The atoll was chosen by the United States as a nuclear weapon testing site after World War II and was the site of 23 nuclear tests until 1958. The islanders were forcibly relocated due to radiation contamination and were unable to return home despite some voluntary returns in the 1970s.
